Description

Der Groyser kundes was a Yiddish-language satirical newspaper that ran in New York from 1909 until 1927. The publication catered to a younger, radical, immigrant generation that arrived from Eastern Europe after the failed 1905 Russian Revolution. Displayed here is a cartoon by Lola (pseudonym of artist Leon Israel) skewering anti-immigrant hypocrisy. From right-to-left (the direction of languages using Hebrew characters) the translated text reads as follows:
  • Panel 1 headline: "In days of yore" ("Biyamim ha-hem")
  • Panel 1 caption: "Lady Liberty, as early immigrants envisioned her"
  • Above torch: "The persecuted from all lands are welcome!"
  • On crown: "Lady Liberty"
  • Inscribed on tablet: "Every person has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness!"
  • Panel 2 headline: "In these times" ("Be'zman ha-zeh")
  • Panel 2 caption: "How the grand-children of early immigrants would now like to see her 'reformed'."
  • Above cat-o'-nine-tails [inscribed "Intolerance"]: "My America! Go back to where you came from!"
  • On sash: "Chauvinist"
  • On padlock: "The right to live belongs only to me!"
In keeping with the paper's "Hanukkah Edition," the headline is a winking reference to the prayer said upon lighting the menorah: "Praised are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who accomplished miracles for our ancestors in days of yore and in these times."
