IX - DOCUMENTARY FILMS

“Centennial Stories: 100 Years on Bellingham Bay” Center for Pacific Northwest Studies and Blackdog Projections, (2004).

A documentary film written and produced by the Center for Pacific Northwest Studies in partnership with BlackDog productions.  The film explores the history of Bellingham through the oral interviews with six long-time residents. Former Port Commissioner Tut Asmundson, Lummi Elder Pauline Hillaire, former WWU instructor and artist Jane Hovde, Fairhaven pharmacist Gordy Tweit, Betty Russell, and George Davenport all share their stories of the history and development of Bellingham.

“Creek Story”Center for Pacific Northwest Studies and Micromedia Productions(2002).

This documentary film was produced by the Center for Pacific Northwest Studies, directed by Dan Hammill & Sukhi Sanghera, and funded by Whatcom Community Foundation.  The film is a comprehensive 30-minute documentary video exploring the history of Whatcom Creek and the meaning of this historic natural resource to the Bellingham community. The film examines the social and cultural history surrounding the creek, and the impact of economic and industrial development over the past two centuries.  The film also explores the 1999 pipeline explosion in Whatcom Creek Park.  The issues surrounding the explosion highlight several recurring themes in the larger history of the Bellingham community and its utilization of local natural resources.  The film features interviews with notable community members and government officials including Mayor Mark Asmundson, environmental leaders, Lummi elders, and interviews and narration by WWU faculty.
