Caption on reverse in ink: "The Sehome school house, first public school bldg. in Whatcom Co., built in 1861. Picture taken in 1873. It stood where Maple St. is today, near Cornwall Ave. The teacher, Isabelle Eldridge, stands in doorway. Hugh Eldridge, large boy near the front. Victor Roeder to his right. Alice Jarman, girl to right, daughter of 'Blanket Bill' Jarman". Shows simple wooden one room structure with at least 26 students standing in front of building.
