Description

Displayed here is a collection of compositions arranged primarily by Samuel Naumbourg, a composer based in nineteenth-century France. Used in the Congregation Ohabai Shalome of San Francisco (1864-2001), Zemirot Yisra'el included psalms and hymns organized within a liturgical structure. Arranged for cantor and male choir with optional organ accompaniment, several volumes of this collection were published from 1847 to 1864.

The endpapers displayed above utilize the art of paper marbling, with this particular piece being an example of the combing technique. Combed marble paper is created with careful, consecutive manipulations of a thin steel wire comb as it moves through ink on the water's surface. As the comb is pulled through the ink, the wire cuts and elongates the design, eventually making the small cell-like pattern present here.
