Often considered one of the most influential writers in the development of modern Hebrew and Yiddish prose, Sholem Yankev Abramovitsh (1835-1917) found a warm reception and mass audience throughout Eastern Europe and beyond following his transition from Hebrew to Yiddish. His 1864 novella displayed above, Dos kleyne menshele (The Little Man), marks Abramovitsh's first major integration of the Yiddish language within his writing.
