Displayed above is a 1791 edition of Moses Mendelsohn's landmark work, Jerusalem, or on Religious Power and Judaism. One of the most significant scholars and works of the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah), Mendelsohn's philosophical treatise Jerusalem distinguishes the separation of church and state while additionally serving as a defense of the Jewish population within the disparaging conditions of the Prussian Monarchy.
