Drawings from unpublished manuscript entitled The Horrible Haircut, by Doris Burn

Doris Burn’s archived illustrations and manuscripts document various different aspects of the creative process, including her pain-staking drafting and editing of materials, and the role of editors and publishers in shaping a final, printed work.

These next two images are reproduced from the unpublished manuscript for The Horrible Haircut - story and illustrations were inspired by an unfortunate haircut received by one of the Burn children!  The manuscript contains hand-written annotations about the various sketched characters.

Have you ever had a haircut that wasn't quite right?
Well!
Hattie had a haircut that really WAS a fright!

Baby spilled his applesauce
And tried to climb the chair.
Cameron asked her helpfully,
"Is it beyond repair?"
"Golly" murmered Marko,
"Did you meet up with a bear?"

"It's only" answered Hattie, "That ...."

Hattie reveals on the next page that, "Daddy cut my hair".
