Middle School Level
Two to four days
- In small groups students explore one of the four sections of the Bellingham Centennial online curriculum - Towns, Industries, People, Schools - either through packets prepared in advance by the teacher, or through materials compiled by their own navigation and printing of their online curriculum section.
- Each group creates a poster using images & text pieces drawn from their online curriculum section.
- Groups teach their classmates about their curriculum section through presenting their poster in class, and talking about what they learned by making their poster.
One to two days
- Watch the 30-minute documentary, Creek Story.
- While watching, students think about: What is the "story" of Whatcom Creek?
- After viewing, talk about: What is the story of Whatcom Creek? - Does it have chapters? - Does it have a moral, or main message? - How does the creek's story connect to the posters about Towns; Industries; People; Schools?
and/or
- As a class, talk about: How is Bellingham the same today as it was 100 years ago? - How is Bellingham different today from how it was 100 years ago?
- Take it further by talking about: Why is it important for a community to stay the same? - Why is it important for a community to change?
- Class might also talk about: How might the Bellingham community be the same and/or different 100 years in the future?
- Class might create a banner visually depicting their comparisons of the past and present (and future) of Bellingham.
